For those who love the mountains and scenery of Colorado, there is no better place than Grand Lakes. A small town with less than 1,000 residents, it's at an elevation of over 8,000 feet and offers privacy unlike most other spots in the state. As an example of this, the late great "Duke" himself, John Wayne, once had a vacation home in Grand Lakes, and was often seen speaking to locals.

Originally a supply town for miners who were working their claims in Teller City and Lulu City, Grand Lakes today is a popular tourist destination due to its being located near Rocky Mountain National Park. While it's weather is generally good most of the year, its elevation makes it one of the state's colder locations. To prove this, the town has only three months out of the year when its average high exceeds 50 degrees Fahrenheit. As its name implies, Grand Lakes was named for Grand Lake, the biggest and deepest natural lake in Colorado, and has many events that focus on its population's love of water. One of the most popular attractions is the Grand Lake Yacht Club, which is home to exciting sailing competitions almost every weekend. Along with this club, residents can also be found at the many private clubs and marinas located at the lake, showcasing just how much fun can be had in this town.

Along with the many activities on the water, Grand Lakes also has an excellent reputation in the state for its cultural events. One of the biggest reasons for this is the Rocky Mountain Repertory Theater, a summer stock theater company that produces numerous musicals and Broadway plays from June-September. Due to its popularity within the region, a new 12,000 square-foot facility was recently built for the company, allowing it to expand its offerings to residents and tourists.

While a very small town, it's clear Grand Lakes has much to offer. Whether hosting larger than life figures such as John Wayne in years past or hosting sailing races today, Grand Lakes is indeed a small town with a big reputation.
